Gastric problems
Q: My 7 year old dog has always been finicky with eating. she has problems after she eats with gas, bloating at times, and seems to be in pain. sometimes she will gag and then run outside and eat lots of grass. she refuses to eat special diets to elininate allergys. baby has been diagnosed with chronic colon problems and placed on various medication. sometimes these help and sometimes there is no difference. she recently had x-rays and it was determined that there was no objects in her stomach or intestinal blockages. she weighed 76 lbs. but recently has lost weight and is now 71 pounds. she is now at a perfect weight but continues with severe problems of discomfort if and when she does eat. right now she will eat chicken and some authority dog food. sometimes she even refuses to eat the chicken and will go for a day and a half without much food. appreciate any further input you might give to me. baby needs this problem resolved. thank you anita yovanovich
A: If complete blood work and x rays done i woudl consider ultrasound of abdomen as well as possible endoscopic exam of intestines and biopsy for definitive diagnosis and best treatment long term. might have inflammatory bowel disease which needs biopsy to diagnose. also could consider homeopathic vet option www.theavh.org

Mange
Q: I have a two puppies both less than a year old. and we're having severe trouble with fleas. while the smaller hairier of the two puppies has more flease the large dog is developing problems from scratching. she's had her hair fall out in places and keeps getting sores from scratching. i was wondering if there's a chance she might be developing mange or if there's anything i could do to help get my dogs taken care of. because i don't personally feel that it's mange because from what i've read mange is very contagious and only one of the two dogs is suffering hair loss.
A: Some types of mange are not conatagious such as demodex. only your vet through skin scrape can rule out. consider good flea control with topical advantage or front line as well as treating house for fleas. can use oral benadryl at dose of 1/2 to 1 mg per pound twice daily for itching. if no help see your vet
