Pet calm tabs - interact with other meds?
Q: I have an approximately 15yr. old springer spaniel / dalmation mix who has recently been put on anipryl (15mg. per day). i was wondering if the pet calm tabs available would interact with this medication at all? my dog has a strong fear of thunderstorms and i was hoping the pet calm tabs would help lessen some of his anxiety. also, we will be moving to a new state and i'm afraid all the changes will prove to be extremely stressful on him. anything you could recommend would be helpful. thanks.
A: Pet calm worth a try. should not interact. also consider flower essences from health food store for long term use like rescue remedy. also flower essence known as aspen often works well when used frequently before and during thunderstorms

Red rash & hair loss
Q: My dog has a history of pyoderma. recently he was treated for it with antibiotics but did not show improvement. this time his rash is a red, bumpy rash with coat loss in patches and is very itchy. can you please help?
A: Antibiotics can treat the infection pyoderma, but will not address underyling causes like inhalent or food allergies in many cases. ask for an allergy workup if keeps reoccurring; also may need different antibiotic. my favorite one is cephalexin for skin issues

Pnuemonia
Q: I adopted my dog from the pound, since i have had her for 3 weeks now she has had a very bad cough, i took her to the vet and they gave her antibiotic, and they said she has pnuemonia in her right lung. she has finished her meds and she is still coughing. what do you recommend i do. thank you dee
A: She may need a different antibiotic like baytril if not already done and possibly a bronchodilator. cconsider repeating x rays, as well as cbc blood count.

Arthritis
Q: My vet told me my dog has arthritis. she wants him to take methocarbanol. what is this. where can i find information on this drug
A: Methocarbamol is the generic name for robaxin. it is a prescription medication available by generic and brand at most community pharmacies. the major side effects of methocarbamol include drowsiness, weakness, nausea, salivation and sedation.

Cat vaccines
Q: So dog vaccines are given just under the skin on the neck, but what about cats? are they administered the same way?
A: Yes they are

Can they handel this
Q: We are going on a 15 hour car trip for vacation. we are taking our 2 small dogs. they love to ride but never have for this long is there any thing i can give them to help with such a long ride. maybe something to help them sleep
A: You can use vita treat pet calm tablets as an aid.

Skabees
Q: My dog seems to be itching all the time.i was told that it was skabees.is there some kind of shampoo or cream that i can use to treat it and is it contagious?
A: Only topical which works is a dip known as lym dip which must be used once weekly for 4 weeks. better choice would be ivermectin which can be used in most breeds except collies, shelties, old english sheepdogs and related herding breeds. disease is fairly contagious to other dogs and can live a short while on people who are dead end host

Heartworms
Q: What are heartworms? how are they treated.how do dogs get heartworms?
A: Heartworms are parasites that enter and survive in the animal's heart. the heartworm eggs are transmitted to the animal by the bite of a mosquito. the treatment involves medications, such as immiticide, administered by a veterinarian in the office. giving a pet heartworm preventative medication on a monthly basis should prevent the pet from getting heartworm disease.

Parvo vaccine for dog that had parvo as a puppy
Q: I have a 9 year old american eskimo that had parvo when he was 3 months old, and also an 11 year old shih-tzu. i have been informed by my vet that they are now doing the parvo vaccine every 2 years, and i'm concerned about my american eskimo that had parvo. is he at a higher risk for getting parvo again, because he had it before? should he still be vaccinated yearly because he had it in the past, just as a precaution? should my shih-tzu only be getting the shot every 2 years?
A: Once a dog has had parvo he is immune for life, and will never get it again so vaccination is unnecessary. also most adult dogs over age 2 are not susceptible to parvo virus which after vaccination or natural infection confers usually lifelong or several years of immunity. you could ask for vaccination antibody titer to document this immunity. also most vet schools now recommend vaccinating at a maximum every 3 years for most viral vaccines and with caution at all if pet is older or has geriatric or immune diseases.

Constant itching
Q: My australian shepherd is 5 years old. he is constantly digging and scratching at himself. he is an indoor/outdoor dog and does go outside frequently. unfortunately we do need to give him frequent baths for flea control (which i know are not only a pest, but he is definitely allergic too), but when we do bathe him we use an oatmeal colloidal shampoo with flea control as well. how can i stop him from scratching? we do not have any kind of hot spots yet, but i am concerned that he may develop a skin infection. i know you recommend benadryl at 1/2 mg per pound, but is that childrens benadryl or is there a benedryl specifically for dogs/cats?
A: The product is the human benadryl (diphenhydramine). we have 25mg tablets (sku 10246).
